Eynesbury Heritage Trail and Forest Loop Walk

Sun Feb 5th 2023 8:00:00 -2:00:00
Eynesbury
A very easy walking path through the grey box and salt bush forest, crossing the dry bed of the Coolibah Creek twice. Plenty of birdlife, kangaroos and other things to see. The walk begins and ends from the designated parking area off Eynesbury Road. This is the only place with a toilet, plus it has a small General Store if you need anything. The bush track is riddled with ant nests and busy curious ants so covered footwear is highly recommended. Also, if the weather is hot, the flies can be a big nuisance so bring along your aeroguard or face net. In view of this we will have a quick morning tea when we arrive and brunch at the end of the walk at a lovely little shaded park. Heritage buildings make for interesting places to stop as we loop around the Greybox Forest. Many of these are testament to the well-preserved pastoralist history of the land. Eynesbury Forest, at 288 hectares, is one of Victoria’s largest remaining stands of Grey Box, & the largest one south of the Dividing Range. It is a reminder of the Grey Box Woodlands that once covered much of this region, along with vast areas of rolling grasslands. In springtime the woodland comes alive with masses of yellow & gold wattles & bushpeas, as well as numerous smaller wildflowers. With over 150 bird species observed so far, as well as a small ornamental Lake Dal Bon, rich in wetland birdlife. A rare opportunity to see woodland bird species. Australia’s rarest water bird, the Freckled Duck, is frequently seen on the lake.

Wed Feb 8th 2023 9:00:00 -11:00:00

The first in a series of short walks for those members who no longer wish to take part in longer walks. The walks are suitable for days when Club Meeting nights are held as they will be finished by midday.

All members are welcome on the walks, as are visitors. However, as these walks will be graded as easy and less than 10 km. they will be classified as NQE and therefore cannot be used by visitors as one of their qualifying walks. The distance for the walks will be between 4-6 km.

This first walk will start at the Woodlands Homestead and proceed over Woodlands Hill before turning north towards Moonee Ponds Creek.

It then follows Murrup Gurrong Yan ( Spiritual Creek Walk) to the Somerton Road Picnic Area for a morning tea break and toilet stop.We then walk along the north side of the Spiritual Creek Walk, heading west to where this "Spritual Walk" returns to the picnic area. At this point we continue to follow the Creek back to the Living Legends area and the walk finish. Refreshments will be available at the Homestead if required.

Moonee Ponds Creek - Woodlands Homestead 2.

Wed Apr 12th 2023 9:30:00 -11:30:00

Back to Woodlands Homestead for another short walk, we again start the walk from the Upper Car Park next to Woodlands Homestead. We head south towards the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail to maybe check out an old River Red Gum tree with an unusual story to tell. From there we continue towards the entrance to the Back Paddock and walk outside it along the fenceline to rejoin the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail. This takes us to the Moonee

Ponds Creek, which we follow north to the Ben Chaffey Watertrail area and back to the finish at the Homestead.
This walk has been regraded as Easy Medium but is still classified as a Non Qualifying Walk.
Runners should be ok, but the grass along the creek may still be a bit long, so walkers may

be more comfortable with walking boots. Walking poles may be useful for walking alongside the creek. We will have a morning tea stop along the way and refreshments will be available at the Homestead as an alternative option to bringing your own lunch. We should finish the walk by midday.

Upper Darebin Findon Loop

Wed Jul 12th 2023 9:30:00 -12:00:00

Starting (and finishing) at Epping, this walk loops Northward along the upper parts of Darebin Creek Trail and Findon Creek Trail. Quiet, interesting linear parkland along the creeks. Good tracks, flat, mainly concrete paths - wear forgiving shoes. The total distance is 9.9km, so it just sneaks in as a "short walk", nevertheless it's a fast track and we'll easily finish by lunchtime.

Meeting place - Epping. We'll meet in Cooper St, Epping, outside "Jax Tyres" (55 Cooper St). There's a strip of all-day parking, beside the electricity sub-station just past Jax tyres, that seems to not fill up. (Driving along Cooper St towards the East, cross High St then turn right into the first right turn after High St - the parking, and meeting spot, is just there.) If you prefer to come by train, Epping Station is 200m away, further East along Cooper St.
