Walk
1952 Walk
It has come to my attention that as well as myself, there are many members born in 1952 - so turning 70 over this year. To celebrate there will be a casual walk in which all those people and of course all members are welcome to join. Meeting at Federation Square under the big screen at 9:30.
The walk will be mainly in the Royal Botanic Gardens to experience the outdoor contemporary art exhibition "Seeing The Invisible". Lunch at or near the "The Terrace" You can bring your own and sit in the garden or purchase lunch.
Werribee Gorge
Please register here for this walk, and also contact Ron on 0429 384 057
Meet at the carpark out the back of Hungry Jacks, Watergardens, Mel map 3, F12 at 8:30, or at 9:30 at the lower carpark at Werribee Gorge.
Will follow the river alomng the bottom of the gorge, including the section where we use ther chain to get along above the water, and then head up the hill for some excellent views. From there we'll go to a mystery lookout before heading back down to the carpark.
Long Forest Conservation Reserve
The walk is approx. 14ks return, Magnificent views of the valley along the Coimadai Creek, ancient rock formations, remnants of an old house, the occasional abandoned mine, kangaroos, great diversity of native birds, frogs and so much more. Most of the track is great and reasonably easy but I've rated the walk as medium to hard because of the track condition as it's very narrow and steep in places and has lots of loose stones and branches and there will be some off track exploring too.
Kororoit Creek 2.
The walk starts at Glenbrook Waters, the furthest point walked last year in the first of the Kororoit Creek walks. We walk a short distance to the M80 Ringroad to meet up with the Kororoit Creek which has meandered around the Deer Park Hotel with no track to follow. The walk continues past More Park to meet up with Ballarat Road and Jones Creek to continue as Kororoit Creek in a south easterly direction, past Selwyn Reserve, then south to the Arthur Beachley Reserve. Soon after, the Creek Trail turns east to reach our turn around point and lunch stop at Buckingham Reserve (toilets).
After lunch we retrace our steps on the opposite side of the creek for a short distance before taking to suburban streets to walk west to the Derrimut Trail, a power line easement, and head north to cross the V line railway at Forrest Road. Soon after, we leave the streets for a while and continue along Kororoit Creek on the opposite side from the morning's walk. Another short street walk takes us back to the creek near Ballarat Road and we walk back along the creek to the M80 and the short distance to the cars.
Covis Restrictions are to be adhered to where applicable.
The walk is mainly flat and on walking/cycle tracks.
Silver Creek Circuit
Just near Flowerdale there is a section of the Kinglake National Park that is infrequently visited. Starting at the Silver Creek Trail head at the very end of Silver Creek Road this walk will take us on management tracks and old forestry tracks along the very edge of the water catchment. While all on track some of the tracks are somewhat overgrown and recent wind events have blown over some more trees so there is a bit of climbing over and under fallen limbs and trunks.
Being Kinglake there are also a few hills to give the lungs a work out. After the 2009 bushfires the regrowth in this area has been staggering and there are still a few tall old trees standing. Tree ferns and lyrebirds are also present and our lunch stop will be a small but pleasant series of cascades.

I have organised maxi taxis to convey us to Sandhurst Reservoir (cost $5 to $8) The walk will take us through box-ironbark forest visiting remnant gold mining sites of Diamond Hill, (our lunch stop) Deborah and Sheepshead Mine workings. Our journey will take us through the Salomon Gully Flora reserve before hitting the streets that will take us to the Rail station, where we will have ample time to enjoy refreshments prior to boarding the 15 ;59 train back to Watergardens, arriving at 17:41 Only one moderate hill, track is in good condition, but boots recommended.
Melbourne historic city walk
Historic walk around historic city buildings
Balt Camp to Nolans Picnic Ground
Situated in the Wombat State Forest, this walk follows quiet tracks and part of the Great Divide Trail. Commencing at the historic Balt Camp ruins, we follow Mountainview Track east to Nolan Creek Road. If it has been cleared after the damaging storms of 2021, we will use the slightly shorter Day Track. Lunch is at the pretty Nolan Picnic Ground near the source of the Lerderderg River. Using the GDWT we walk south to Stockyard Creek Track. Here the tree ferns and blackwood trees are resplendent. A short uphill returns us to the cars. It is an interesting part of Wombat State Forest. Balt Camp was a forestry camp for male refugees from the Baltic States after WW2 and the Adel Mine site is across the road. Nolans Picnic Ground was once the site of a sawmill. There are a few steep ascents and descents, some rocky surfaces and at times evidence of the recent storms. Walking poles are recommended.
Lara Environs
This walk visits the outlying areas of Lara, including parklands, wetlands and Hovells Creek. The walk starts at Lara Station and heads south along the Hovell Creek Trail to the Hume and Hovell Memorial near the Princes Freeway. From there we cross over Hovells Creek and walk along a country road to reach the Lara Lakelands where we will see the result of recent work carried out to improve the wetland area.
From there, another short walk along suburban streets brings us to the Westlake Boulevard area to explore this southwest corner of Lara. Millars cafe is included in the tour of the lakes area for those wanting to buy refreshments ( toilets available).
After lunch, we make our way to Six Ways Corner (toilets), then walk along Flinders Avenue to Hovells Creek. A short walk along the creek will take us to the Kevin Hoffmann Walk for the short walk through the gardens before heading to the Lara Shopping Centre and the return to Lara Station.
