Newport to Altona

Mon May 8th 2023 10:00:00 -2:30:00

This is the first of several "urban" walks I hope to put on. I will generally put them on a Monday or Tuesday, so as not to interfere with the more typical "bush" walks on Wednesdays. They will all start at a cafe next to a railway station, and finish near another railway station on the same line.

This walk will start from "Pango" cafe, immediately to the East of Newport Railway station. Walking will start at 10am - if you want a "starter" coffee get there at 9.30 ...

The walk is 14km long, flat (maximum elevation 23m), and will include Newport Lakes Reserve, Paisley Park, some good views of the old oil refinery, then along the Hobsons Bay Trail through Altona Coastal Park, finishing at Altona Station. (Train back to Newport after a coffee.)

You Yangs - Flinders, West, Northern, Saddle and East Loop

Sat May 13th 2023 9:15:00 -2:00:00

We'll meet in Turntable Drive car park, two kilometres inside the You Yangs Regional park.  Toilets here are the only ones we will encounter.

A variation on the last time this walk was run is that we'll do it in reverse starting with a climb to Flinders Peak and then joining up with the West track.

On the next leg, the Northern Range Walk provides dramatic rock formations and offer ideal morning tea stop options.

We'll stop for lunch after a steep climb on the Saddleback Track and then join the East Walk where we will decend through big stairs and granite boulders and have sweeping views of distant Melbourne and much closer trees.  Plenty of up, down, over and around path obstacles.that takes us back to where we started.

Other than two flat stretches the rest of the walk leans towards being more medium than easy.

Boots and walking poles are recommended.

Yankee Creek to Yankee Mine Circuit Recce

Sat May 20th 2023 9:30:00 -3:00:00

This walk takes in varied scenery along Yankee Creek, along water races through pleasant forest in a lesser-known area that has a rich history of gold mining.   Stay in Daylesford for the weekend to do both the Saturday and Sunday walks or attend as day trips.   This is a pre-walk for the Federation Weekend in October.  Walking along walking tracks and fire trails, this is a circuit to the Yankee Mine site.  Includes a moderate steady climb for the first 7 kms – then mostly downhill.  As this is a recce walk, there may be some frequent stopping and minor backtracking.

Cobaw Forest

Wed May 24th 2023 9:00:00

Cobaw State Forest is a small area of forested granitic hills NW of Lancefield. This is a short walk mainly on 4WD management tracks - but also includes about 1.6km of off track walking, slow but reasonably straightforward through granite boulder terrain. The total distance is about 11km, with total  rise/descent about 200m. Poles will be useful.

The "start walk" location is very hard to describe, so I'm wanting people to meet in Lancefield. We'll go by car convoy from there. So, meet in High St, Lancefield, at the Toilet Block (just off the main road, on the left, beside the "Grain Store" gift shop). Meet at 9.15am.

Blackburn to Alamein

Mon Jun 19th 2023 9:30:00 -3:00:00

A city walk, from Blackburn Station to Alamein Station (not on the same line but connect via Camberwell - that's if you need to drive to the start point). The walk will loop around and through Blackburn Lake Sanctuary, then down Gardiner's Creek trail to Alamein - where we can, we'll avoid the main bike path. The walk is 15km long, gradually downhill, on good paths.

We'll meet at "Nuts about Coffee" cafe (80 South Parade, Blackburn) or, just beside it, "Fat Cup Cafe". Both cafes are immediately South of Blackburn Station. Meet at 9.30 if you need a pre-walk coffee, or at 10am ready to start walking!

The walk will finish at "Habitat Cafe" (40 Victory Bvd, Ashburton) - that's about 100m East of Alamein Station
