Coliban Channel & Fryers Ridge

Sun Jun 25th 2023 9:30:00 -2:30:00

Take Davey Road, Tarradale to the meeting point at the intersection of Fryerstown Road and Sargeants Rd, Taradale. The Davey Road route has less unsealed road and is suitable for a 2WD. From the meeting point we will drive cars to the nearby walk start. No other meeting point is planned by the walk leader.

The walk is to the west of Taradale along the Coliban Channel and also the tracks and roads further west, within Fryers Ridge Nature Conservation Reserve (eucalyptus forest with light bushland understory). The planned burn by Parks Victoria has recently been conducted and completed in part of this conservation reserve, evidence of which the walk group will witness from a section of walking route.

The history of the Coliban Water System, from 1851 to the present day, is well documented in the 3 page brochure: “Joseph Brady’s Coliban System of Water Works”. This can be downloaded from
https://coliban.com.au/files/2019-06/CW_JBrady_collated-Web.pdf.  If water has recently been released from nearby Malmsbury reservoir, we can expect a reasonable water level and flow along the channel. The walk beside the channel offers a serene setting, and openings between mainly eucalyptus trees with views to nearby farms and country properties, and private dams and the Taradale basin.

Recommendations: Walking poles might come in handy, as it is likely to be slippery underfoot with damp and/or dewy mornings during winter, or if there has been recent showers or rain (or if this eventuates on the day).  Bring a water resistant and windproof jacket, and if you tend to feel the cold, warm gloves. Remember to carry your lunch, snacks and at least 1 litre of drinking water.  You are not permitted to, nor should you, drink water from the Coliban channel.

Mid winter warmer Westbreen Ck

Sat Jul 8th 2023 10:20:00 -2:30:00

Never mind the winter weather, a brisk walk to sharpen up the appetite and a lazy lunch at the nearby Pascoe Vale Hotel and finishing with a 2km stroll to make the requisite 10km for the day. Being a short walk we can have the luxury of a lazy start , meeting at Pascoe Vale St at 10.20 am, then we walk along beside the very pleasant Westbreen Ck , followed by a circumnavigation of the Northern Golf Club grounds and return on the other side of Westbreen Ck to the Pascoe Vale Hotel for our reward of a hot lunch. If post pranial inertia hasn,t set in , the 2 km stroll along the Moonee Ponds Ck, as mentioned makes up the requisite 10km and will take us to Strathmore Rly Station for the return to home. For public transport walkers, , the Craigieburn train leaves Flinders St at 9.57, Essendon St at 10.13 arriving at Pascoe Vale at 10.18. For drivers, there is railway parking at the front of the hotel as well as the the hotel,s own park and instead of going to the city to return home, take the train from Strathmore back to the cars. Winter woolies, comfortable shoes and your usual morning tea . Standard pub fare with prices ranging from $10 to $14 in pleasant surroundings . The new category of Short Walkers are welcome to cover the Westbreen Ck paths, have a lengthy morning tea break and rejoin the group later.

Poverty Gully and Fryers Water Race

Sun Jul 16th 2023 8:00:00 -3:00:00

This walk follows the Poverty Gully Water Channel, one of the many water races that provided water to the goldfields.  Following a 4WD track we will follow the water race for several kilometres through bushland that is just about to burst with spring colour and plenty of fungi.  After about 5 or so kilometres we will leave the race and then join a meandering bike trail which will take us through some amazing gullies and gold diggings, eventually meeting up with Crocodile Reservoir, just outside of Fryerstown.  We will pick up the Fryers water race which has been hidden in time, before making our way back to the car along Morgan Track.

While only 12 km this is a rewarding walk and while there are no steep hills there are plenty of ups and downs and the recent rains will have made the paths muddy.  There is some off track walking along the water race, though not difficult walking poles are recommended as well as gaiters to keep some of the mud at bay.

The walk will commence at Morgan track which can be accessed via the Vaughan Chewton Road.  There is only room for one or two c

GREEN SPINE AND CITY VIEWS

Sat Aug 5th 2023 9:45:00 -3:30:00

We,re still in winter mode with leisurely starts and shorter routes. Not an authentic bushwalk but still a pleasant creek side stroll. The Green Spine is the local council ,s environmental project to create a green ribbon through a semi industrial area. It then  connects with the rather pleasant Steele,s Creek trail. A detour to the bikies grave, a circuit of the Valley Lake and just to make sure the leg muscles get some exercise , 150 steps up to the Valley lake lookout . Lunch at the Kelvin St playground before following the creek down to Buckley St  and up to Lily St for the excellent views over the city and the Maribyrnong River.  Bring your MYKI card as we return to Aldi via the bus and tram and maybe stopping at Essendon St for a coffee or a gelati or if time is short back at Airport West .

9.45 at the  Airport West  Aldi Carpark ( SE corner) . 11kms ,Easy, light walking shoes will be fine,. lunch and morning tea, winter apparel of course and dont forget the MYKI card.

Allowing a few extra minutes before hand to locate the shopping complex toilets is hightly recommended !!

Public transport is the 59 Airport West tram to the terminus and walking through the complex to the Aldi store  and its car park outside . or stop 58 at Moore St and walking west for 2 long blocks to reach the carpark without running the gauntlet of the Sat shoppers .For train patrons, take the Craigieburn train to Essendon, follow the signs for the tram stop at the big roundabout and continue to the terminus or stop 58.

Mill Park Lake and Quarry Hill

Wed Aug 16th 2023 10:00:00 -2:00:00

Mill Park Lakes is a relatively new suburb on the Northern edge of Melbourne. It has a horseshoe-shaped stretch of undeveloped parkland around it - Quarry Hill Bushland Reserve and Granite Hill Park. This walk is predominantly in those parks.

We start by following the aptly named Henderson Road Drain then skirt the eponymous Lake, thus far within the suburban development. After that though, it's into the hills (gentle and rounded) for the majority of the walk. 11 to 12 km, good tracks with a variety of surfaces, ranging from concrete paths in the suburban section to formed paths and natural grassland in the parks. Not flat - just a few undulations along the way. Poles optional. Good geological interest and lots of kangas in the northern section.

We meet in the car-park of Mill Park Lakes Recreation Reserve - off The Lakes Boulevard, near the corner of Parlette Terrace. Walking to start at 10am.
