Werribee River walk, Spargo Creek , Wombat State Forest

Sat Oct 28th 2023 2:00:00 -2:00:00

This is a fabulous really picturesque medium circuit bushwalk of 14ks. Lots of undulating hills (some undulating more than others ?) plus one river crossing. The walk follows the Werribee River to Spargo Creek Road, then we double back for a bit making our way to the Werribee River Camping Ground just past Carroll's Track to view the Spargo Creek Weather Station.Should the river be high, then we have another track to follow without getting our feet wet..

Directions: Take the Western Hwy then take the Ballan Daylesford Rd exit and head towards Daylesford. Approx 9ks down the road, turn right into Bunding-Blakeville Rd and keep driving till you come to a lovely little picnic area (Werribee River Picnic Ground) and park there.

NOTE: The turnoff into Bunding-Blakeville Rd is an unsealed good quality road BUT is easily missed and just before a bend.

Cornishmen, Monsters and Welshmen

Sun Nov 12th 2023 8:00:00 -2:00:00

The walk commences at the Garfield Water wheel, located on Quartz Hill Track Chewton (turn into North Road and there are directional signs pointing to the Water Wheel).

Parks Victoria have installed a lot of informational signs about the Water Wheel and the mining history of the area, so we will take the opportunity to learn more about this fascinating area.  Our walk will start by following one of the many water races that were constructed in this area before a short off track (not difficult) section before picking up Dead Cat Mine Track.  We will pass a Cornish Chimney, stop for morning tea and then make our way to the Monster Meeting site, to learn even more history of the gold mining area.  Our next stop will be at Expedition Pass Reservoir, following Forrest Creek, before heading off to the Welsh Village for a well earned lunch and a look around the village.

Making our way back to the cars along Sailors Gully (one of many) passing by the Black smiths hut and viewing some of the remanants of (more) old water races.

Afternoon tea will be in Castlemaine.

The walk is about 95% on track, and there are no steep climbs or demanding hills, though the usual ups and downs.  Poles and gaiters are recommended

Pyrites Creek

Sat Nov 18th 2023 9:00:00 -4:00:00

Pyrete Range, North of Melton, is a relatively recent addition to Lerderderg State Park. This walk is along 4WD tracks and walking tracks for the first 5km, passing by an old antimony mine. We then enter Pyrites Creek (normally dry) and walk along the sinuous river-stone bed of the creek for a bit over 4km, before ascending back towards the vehicles, initially along an un-tracked gully then walking/4wd tracks. Under 14km in length and not particularly hilly, the "medium-hard" designation comes from the fact that over half of the walk is on natural surfaces - river bed and vegetated side-gully. Additionally, if it has been wet, wet feet can be expected! Poles are recommended.

(This walk is described in "Daywalks around Victoria" (Glenn Tempest), walk 19.

To get to the start point - 1. Get to the small town of Toolern Vale   2. Head West on Diggers Rest - Coimadai Rd for just over 7km.     3. Turn right into Antimony Mine Road and follow it for 3.7km to a small car-park.

Car-pooling available from Moonee Ponds Bowls Club - encouraged where possible as the car park is small.
