Walk
Keilor Circuit
This walk will require a short car shuffle to the rear of Bunnings, Watergardens. Aboriginals camped along the creek for thousands of years prior to European settlement. You'll see many species of birds, um trees and lava tubes. The creek runs through to Ochre Cliff where Aboriganals made their paint. Continuing onto Brimbank to Keilor for afternoon tea.
Windsor to Spotswood
Continuing on from the "Royal Palace" tour, this walk starts at Windsor but takes a sharp dip in the social scale to visit the "under the bridge" site where the leader spent his first 10 formative years ...
Route includes some of Albert Park (another Royal connection) then the coast path from Middle Park to Sandridge, Sandridge Lookout, Westgate Park. AND a short river cruise on the Westgate Punt!
Starting Point is "Oppen Cafe" (20/2 Maddock St, Windsor - just N of Windsor Station). Walking to start at 11.30am - note late start! Finish point is Spotswood Station. 15km, flat.
Notes
1. Late start is because first afternoon punt is at 3.40pm
2. Punt trip fare is $3, and can only be paid by EFTPOS card.
3. This walk will be modified or possibly cancelled if forecast maximum above 30.
Panton Hill Walk
This walk will loop through several bushland reserves linked by quiet country roads. It will also take in the Smith's Gully - St Andrews Heitage Trail.. There should be some good views towards the Dandenongs (ie some parts are hilly!).
Woodlands - Gellibrand Hill Perimeter walk (2)
Meeting at lower carpark at Woodlands Homestead we will walk down to Moonee Ponds Creek bike path to the park boundary where we will turn to head up towards Gellibrand Hill. We will enjoy the views from the hill and them we will follow the park boundary till we reach the plantation where we will head north then west to the Somerton Rd picnic area. From here we follow the Moonee Ponds creek before turning up to head back to the homestead. Bring plenty of water and sun protection as some sections have little shade. A gemerally easy walk with a rise to Gellibrand Hill. Please note the walk may be modified or cancelled if the forecast temperature is over 30oC
Hurstbridge to Eltham
This walk is on good walking (and cycling) trails, starting with the quite new Hurstbridge to Diamond Creek trail, then on the older trail to Eltham. Distance 14.5km, mostly flat (descending, overall).
The walk starts beside Hurstbridge Station - meet at "Stoneground Bakehouse" (798 Main Rd, Hurstbridge) - and will finish at Eltham Station, with a choice of cafes nearby.
Walking will start at 10am.
If you come by train, be aware that Hurstbridge has a relatively infrequent train timetable; the two trains to check for arrive at Hurstbridge at 9.39am and 9.57am. If you do the whole journey by train, the time from Essendon (for example) to Hurstbridge is about 90 minutes. An alternative is to drive, and park somewhere along the train route.
Mount Piper & Broadford Common
Most people travelling up the Hume Freeway near Broadford will have noticed the forested, distinctly conical hill off to the left of the highway - very different in appearance to the other, more rounded hills in the area. What's going on there? (No, it's not a volcano).
This walk has two sections - we'll meet in Broadford, drive out to Mt Piper (about 5km) for the first part, then return to Broadford for the second.
The conical hill is Mt Piper, and as well as being geologically interesting, is clothed in a varied eucalypt forest and is the habitat of two species of rare butterfly!
This walk will go around the hill and ascend to the top (steep, but an OK track and only 150m vertical ascent). The Mt Piper part of the walk is just under 7km, so after that we will return to Broadford for lunch (BYO or bakery) and then undertake a pleasant walk around the Broadford Town Common (one of only a few official "Town Commons" remaining in Victoria). That part is just over 5km and flat.
(The meeting place for car-pooling is the Airport West Shopping Town car-park to the West of Target. The meeting place in Broadford is at the "Lions Park", on High Street, just before you cross Sunday Creek on the way into town.)
Kangaroo Ground to Sugarloaf Reservoir Walk
An undulating walk through farmlamd and open bushland taking in a section of the former Maroondah Aqueduct.
The walk starts from the Kangaroo Ground Cemetery, in Cemetery Road, Kangaroo Ground at 9.30 AM. (Ensure you park outside the section of the carpark designated for visitors to the cemetery).
The walk initially passes through hilly horse and cattle farming country following an easement then a quiet road. The next section is along a narrow track following Fryers Gully. After a short unsealed road section we will then follow foot and vehicular style tracks through Warrandyte-Kinglake Conservation Reserve to Sugarloaf Resevior. Tracks are undulating and gravelly, so can be slippery. On reaching the reservoir we will walk a short section of the shore to the Saddle Dam Picnic Area. We will then retrace our steps except for taking the track along the former Maroondah Aqueduct rather than following Fryers Gully.
Royal and Princes parks walk
This urban walk starts at Moonee Ponds Bowling Club, goes down some side streets to Moonee Ponds Creek, passes through Parkville Gardens and emerges near some playing fields of Royal Park. We'll have morning tea here before joining the Capital City Trail for a short time then do a loop of Princes Park and break for lunch. We'll then rejoin the Capital City Trail and make our way back to the bowling club. An easy walk on mainly flat surfaces with some small climbs midway and at the end. Joggers are fine. Boots optional. If weather is forecast to be over 30 degrees the walk may be modified or cancelled.
Sherbrooke Forest
A fairly standard walk but in one of our area's best locations. Tall montane forests, lyrebirds etc. This walk will follow the path described in Chapman's book "Day Walks Melbourne" (Walk 24). A circuit walk starting and finishing at Grants Picnic Ground, Kallista. Distance 11.5km, good walking tracks; a bit up and down (it is the Dandenongs, after all) - total up/down is 480m.
Elevation, tall forests and shaded tracks mean hopefully excess heat won't be a problem, but the walk will possibly be cancelled if it's a very hot day forecast.
Car-pooling from Moonee Ponds (8am) or meet at Grants (9.15am)
Roxburgh Park - Glenroy
A local walk for many of us, I know, but it's easy and it will be during (possibly too hot) February, after all.
Train to Roxburgh Park station and coffee at a cafe - the "Jolly Miller", on the SouthWest corner of Roxburgh Village shopping Centre. (It's about 250m West of the Roxburgh Park Station). Walking to start 10am or earlier, arrive early if you want a coffee.
We will loop slightly to the North from the start, then head down the Broadmeadows Creek trail and Moonee Ponds Creek trail, eventually diverting to the East to Glenroy shops and Station.
16km but easy walking and more or less downhill all the way! (Broadmeadows and Jacana stations are "opt-out early" locations.)
