Plenty Gorge Yellowgum

Wed Oct 16th 2024 9:00:00 - Wed Oct 9th 2024 2:30:00

This walk is through another area of Plenty Gorge - to the south of Marek's walk. The walk will be on a combination of tracks with some off-track sections. There are some steep slopes up/down and both the grass or the loose rocks can be slippery - poles will be useful. Gaiters will also be useful for the off-track sections.

Car-pooling will be from Airport West (west of Target) at 8am, for a walk start at 9am from Yellow Gum Car Park (Goldsworthy Lane, Plenty). At Goldsworthy Lane, please head to the furthest carpark - its' the Plenty Gorge MTB car park. Please note that I am happy to organise the car-pooling, but I'm afraid I'm heading in the opposite direction after the walk, so will not be able to be a carpool driver.

Wirrawilla and Tanglefoot tracks

Sat Nov 9th 2024 9:30:00 -2:00:00

A very pleasant circuit walk of 13km, stitching together parts of several marked walking tracks in Toolangi State Forest. Tall tree ferns, extremely tall mountain ash, and Myrtle beeches in the gullies - prime lyrebird habitat. We also include a short side-trip up Mount Saint Leonard for superb views over the Yarra Valley.

The walk starts with a steady climb (100m) initially, then undulates, rising slowly. The extra climb to Mount Saint Leonard may sound daunting, but we're nearly there after our morning tea stop - just an extra 60m up. From there, it's all downhill - I promise!

Tracks are in good condition, a few fallen trees, but generally OK.

As well as lyrebirds, it's also prime leech habitat - be prepared.

The meeting point and start of the walk is the car-park for "Wirrawilla Rainforest Walk". It's off Sylvia Creek Rd, a bit East of Toolangi. (Google Maps is happy with Myrtle Gully Walk, as well as Wirrawilla Rainforest Walk - both will get you to the same spot.) There is a toilet there. Walk to start at 9.30am

Car-pooling from Airport West if needed, meet at 7.50am.

Coffee after the walk will hopefully be at the "Singing Gardens of CJ Dennis and Tearooms" in nearby Toolangi - sounds interesting.

Hughsdale to East Malvern via Ashburton

Mon Nov 11th 2024 9:45:00 - Fri Oct 11th 2024 2:30:00

A city walk, starting at a cafe next to Hughsdale Station ("Dose One" cafe, 1 Willesden Rd Hughsdale) and finishing at a cafe just South of East Malvern Station ("Jake and the Beans Talk" cafe, 510 Waverley Rd, Malvern East.)

The walk heads north from Hughsdale and loops around, beyond Ashburton, before circling back to East Malvern. Good walking tracks, nearly all in parkland - Outer Circle Linear Park, Urban Forest Reserve, part of Scotchman Creek Trail and Anniversary Trail, Ferndale Trail, along Gardiners Creek trail on the return to east Malvern. Total distance 14 km, flat.

Walking will start at 9.45am from the Dose One cafe, get there at 9.30 or thereabouts if you want a pre-walk coffee.

Hughsdale and East Malvern are on different rail lines - all the way on public transport is easest, but if you drive to Hughsdale instead, you need to walk an extra 1km to Murrumbeena Station to get back on the right line.

Cathedral Southern Circuit

Sat Nov 30th 2024 10:00:00 -2:30:00

This 2 days of walking will be jointly led by Melanie and Jim. There are two consecutive day-walks - walkers can do either or both (staying overnight nearby if doing both). When registering, register for one day, or on both days if that's your plan.

Cathedral Range is an iconic "medium/hard" walk to the East of Melbourne. Mel's description of the Southern Circuit (from her Maroondah Club -"Starting at Sugarloaf Saddle we climb up the Razorback Track over Sugarloaf Peak. Continue along Razorback Track to The Farmyard then down to Cooks Mill via a steep descent of the Jawbone Creek track. The walk is classified as medium/hard due to rock scrambling along the razorback which can be slow going and for which a degree of confidence is required."

The walk is just over 10km, and, optionally, can be shortened a little with a judicious car-shuffle. Long pants, long-sleeved shirts and shoes with good grip are recommended. Poles are optional, they can get in the way at times. Although it's a short walk in distance, it takes a fair time and has no water along the track - make sure you have enough.

Meeting time at Cooks Mill is 10am - it's a 2 hour drive from Airport West. Both Melanie and Jim will be staying overnight in the Alexandra area, so will not be able to offer car-pooling on either day. However, if walkers are coming for one day and want to car-pool, perhaps it can be arranged. We'd recommend starting from Airport West.

If staying overnight, there is National Parks camping at Cooks Mill, Caravan Parks at Taggerty and Acheron, and other accommodation in the Alexandra area.

Mel and Jim will also be organising a Saturday pub meal in Alexandra on the Saturday night.

Cathedral Range is an iconic "medium/hard" walk to the East of Melbourne. Mel's description of the Northern Circuit (from her Maroondah Club -"Begins with a steep climb up St Bernards and Jawbone Creek track. The walk then takes us along the ridge track, this is a rugged ridge line with exposed rocky outcrops to Cathedral Peak. Continue down Neds Gully Track. The walk is classified as medium/hard due to rock scrambling along the razorback which can be slow going and for which a degree of confidence is required."

The walk is about 12km and, optionally, can be shortened a little with a judicious car-shuffle. Long pants, long-sleeved shirts and shoes with good grip are recommended. East Walk and Cowan Track Loop

Sat Dec 14th 2024 9:30:00 -3:00:00

A medium to hard 12 km walk. If coming from Melbourne, drive along Greendale Trentham Road and turn right at O'Briens Road. Travel along 5.9 kilometres of unsealed road to O'Brien's Crossing Picnic Ground, our starting point.  For the first six kilometres the walk follows the Lerderderg River with some walking over rocks and along steep sides of a hill before heading inland.  Along the way are magnificent views of the river and surrounds.  The return leg along Cowan Track is less rocky but numerous hills will get the heart pumping before reaching Short Cut Track. From here we descend a few kilometres on a rocky 4WD track before arriving back at the cars.  Refreshments will be in Bacchus Marsh.  Boots and poles are recommended.
