Newbury to Lyonville Springs Circuit

Wed Dec 18th 2024 8:00:00 -3:00:00

This circuit walk starts in Newbury which is between Trentham and Blackwood. It follows old logging tracks, joins the Domino Trail and later links to an old Tramway to reach the historic mineral springs north of Lyonville. There are undulations but is generally a pleasant walk. Gaiters and poles are recommended.  Note: the meeting point on the Trentham/Blackwood Rd can be called Clarrie Donald Track or Donald Lane.

Blue Mountain Exploratory

Sun Dec 22nd 2024 8:00:00 -3:00:00

Blue Mountain is situated south of Trentham near Newbury. Today there is no view, only a Communication Tower.  However the area is imbued with history, especially relating to gold mining.

Few people know of the old cemetary that lies just below the summit and that there was a significant settlement nearby.  I am calling the walk "exploratory" because I have not walked it recently. But it is pleasant walking on tracks, undulating, with at least one notable climb to Blue Mountain.  It is a circuit walk starting at the junction of the Blackwood/Trentham Rd and Amelia Lane Sth. Note, there is another entrance to Amelia Lane closer to Trentham. Amelia Lane St is just south of Kearney Rd in Newbury.

Malcolm Creek Circuit Craigieburn.

Wed Jan 8th 2025 9:30:00 -2:30:00

The 40 hectare Malcolm Creek Linear Park has been landscaped with asphalt and concrete footpaths ,playgrounds, toilets and shelters, all built around 120 existing river red gums which have been protected due to their age and environmental significance.
There is also a conservation area set aside for the endangered Golden Sun Moth. The breeding time for the Golden Sun Moth  is over a six week period in November/ December. Walkers may therefore get lucky and see some of the moths as we pass by the conservation area.

The meeting place will be the smaller of the two car parks at Craigieburn Bunnings -Melway 387 C5 . The easiest way to get to Bunnings is to take the Hume Freeway north and leave it at the second Craigieburn turnoff (Amaroo Road). Bunnings is directly across Amaroo Road.

Domino Trail

Sat Jan 11th 2025 10:00:00 -2:30:00

This is a delightful easy walk following an old rail trail from Trentham to Lyonville.  The trail is mostly in tall forest making for a shady walk.  The return walk will divert onto a 4 wheel drive track for part of the walk which will give a different aspect to the walk and make it more interesting.  You will see the impact of the storm in 2021 which flattened large areas of the forest.  The walk may be modified depending on weather conditions and cancelled if a Total Fire ban day or over 30oC forecast.

Sorry, the event is now full and we could not accept more registration

Hurstbridge to Eltham

Mon Jan 13th 2025 10:00:00 -2:30:00

This is a repeat of the walk in Jan 2024, which was interrupted by heavy rain and flooding in Diamond Creek. Better luck this time?

The walk is 14.5km on good walking (and cycling, so take care) paths. Flat generally, gradually descending.

We start at Hurstbridge Station. Meet at Wild Wombat cafe, (2/784 Heidelberg-Kinglake Rd, Hurstbridge - just East of the station). Walking to commence 10am, arrive earlier if you want a coffee. The walk finishes at Eltham Station, with a variety of cafes nearby.

Be aware that the Hurstbridge line has a relatively infrequent train service - the two services to look for arrive at 9.39am and 9.57am.

Mount Piper and Broadford Common

Sat Jan 18th 2025 9:30:00 -2:30:00

(This is a repeat of a Wednesday walk in Jan 2024 - we had a lot of torrential rain early on. Let's hope for better weather this time - but not too hot ...)

Most people travelling up the Hume Freeway near Broadford will have noticed the forested, distinctly conical hill off to the left of the highway - very different in appearance to the other, more rounded hills in the area. What's going on there? (No, it's not a volcano).

This walk has two sections - we'll meet in Broadford, drive out to Mt Piper (about 5km) for the first part, then return to Broadford for the second.

The conical hill is Mt Piper, and as well as being geologically interesting, is clothed in a varied eucalypt forest and is the habitat of two species of rare butterfly!

This walk will go around the hill and ascend to the top (steep, but an OK track and only 150m vertical ascent). The Mt Piper part of the walk is just under 7km, so after that we will return to Broadford for lunch (BYO or bakery) and then undertake a pleasant walk around the Broadford Town Common (one of only a few official "Town Commons" remaining in Victoria). That part is just over 5km and flat.

(The meeting place for car-pooling is the Airport West Shopping Town car-park to the West of Target. The meeting place in Broadford is at the "Lions Park", on High Street, just before you cross Sunday Creek on the way into town.)

Wombat Trail Trentham

Wed Jan 22nd 2025 8:00:00 -3:00:00

Somethng different .. a lovely easy and reasonably shady walk followed by lunch at the Trentham Hotel.

A beautifull and easy 10k circuit walk commencing in Trentham. We walk to the historic railway station, then along part of the disused railway and turn off at the old railway bridge. We then cut through the Quarry St Rec Reserve to the Stony Creek Track. This takes us past the historical Trentham Cemetary where we cross to commence the walk to the site of the old Trentham Racecourse track.

Once we complete the circuit, we wander back through unsealed roads to town and lunch at the Trentham Hotel.

While this walk has reasonable dappled tree cover for a good portion, hats, water etc recomended. Runners are suitable for this walk. Bring morning tea only if you are having lunch..

Park in Market Street under the shade of the beautiful trees and toilets nearby. We commence and return from the walk here.

Even though this walk is easy, its still in bushy terrain and its been a bumper year for snakes. So even though you've got more chance of indigestion after a big meal at the pub than encountering a snake, your1st aid kit and snake bite kit should always be included in your pack.

Trentham Hotel is at 31 High Street, Trentham
