Walk
Woodend Circuit
An easy 10 km scenic walk around the township of Woodend. We'll meet in the Woodend Railway Station car park opposite Coles then weave our way through wide residential streets, bush tracks, park land and reserves. Poles are optional. After lunch we'll walk alongside Five Mile Creek and come out onto Woodend's main street with a few cafes to choose from to enjoy a coffee before returning to the car park.
Note: If weather is forecasted to be 30 degrees and over the walk will be cancelled.
Blue Mount
This is a 13.5km circuit walk from Newbury, near Trentham. First scheduled last December, it was cancelled due to fire risk. It is a pleasant walk, mainly on tracks with some a little overgrown and undulating. We walk up to Blue Mount with its fire and communications tower. The mountain no longer has a good view but it is still worth the climb. Nearby is the old cemetery, a left over from the days when this was a serious gold mining area. From here we head to the eastern side of the Mount, using mainly Pronk and Albion Tracks to return to the cars.
Note: Amelia Lane has two entrances from the Greendale/Trentham Rd. The walk start is at the southern end, very close to Kearney Rd in Newbury.
Burchell Circuit
The Burchell Circuit is a 13 - 14 kilometre trail located near Steiglitz, Victoria ( a small settlement in the Brisbane Ranges) and is rated as mainly medium. This is an interesting and varied walk that includes several climbs on rocky surfaces and gravel followed by some flat sections of well worn, even tracks. Poles and walking boots are recommended. For those who are interested refreshments will be at the Loot Cafe in Bacchus Marsh.
If leaving from Moonee Ponds or nearby please allow up to 1.5 hours in travelling time.
Where the forecast is over 30 degrees or a total fire ban the walk will be cancelled.
Coliban Main Channel Section 1
The Coliban Main Channel was constructed in the 1860's and early 1870's, to deliver water to Bendigo from the Reservoir on the Coliban River at Malmsbury. Over 70km in length through hilly country, it was, and still is, an engineering marvel; not just a channel, it included numerous flumes (elevated channel over gullies), several tunnels through high ridges, a couple of inverted siphons (pipes across deep creeks) and several dissipators (artificial rapids when the channel slope needs to be high).
This is the first of a series of walks that will traverse, from Malmsbury towards Bendigo, those parts of the channel accessible to the public - about 58km in total. Several of the walks (not this one) will be "one-way", ie a car shuffle will be needed.
This first walk is along the initial section of the channel from the reservoir (about 5km) up to the first tunnel, and, shortly after that, the first syphon.
The walk starts and finishes at the Malmsbury Reservoir car-park. Car-pooling from Airport West available.
Brimbank Hills and Dales
Meeting at the Brimbank Park Cafe at 10am we will have a coffee before setting off at 10.30am. We will walk up the escarpment then follow the trail to the EJ Whitten bridge where the track drops reasonably quickly to the Maribyrnong River. We then follow the river back into the park before leaving the main trail and following a track up the escarpment again then follow this trail to the Works Depot. From here we cross the entrance road and follow the trail gently back down to the river and along to the cafe. Youi can then enjoy lunch at the cafe or bring your own or head off home. Poles could be useful for the up and down bits. This walk is a non qualifying walk as it is not 10km long.

Firth Park
A pleasant circuit walk from the Firth Park campground SE of Trentham through bushland along 4WD and walking tracks. Firth Park is a popular picnic/camping area with an interesting history. This particular walk was part of the 2023 Federation event and includes the source of the Campaspe River. I may change the published route to avoid particular 4WD tracks.
To access Firth Park, I strongly suggest driving via Ashbourne Rd from Woodend. The road from Gisborne was potholed and not suitable for many car types.
Coliban Main Channel section 2
The Coliban Main Channel was constructed in the 1860's and early 1870's, to deliver water to Bendigo from the Reservoir on the Coliban River at Malmsbury. Over 70km in length through hilly country, it was, and still is, an engineering marvel; not just a channel, it included numerous flumes (elevated channel over gullies), several tunnels through high ridges, a couple of inverted siphons (pipes across deep creeks) and several dissipators (artificial rapids when the channel slope needs to be high).
This is the second of a series of walks that will traverse, from Malmsbury towards Bendigo, those parts of the channel accessible to the public - about 58km in total. Several of the walks (including this one) will be "one-way", ie a car shuffle will be needed.
This walk follows the channel for about 15km as it winds its way from near Malmsbury to Elphinstone, mostly near the edge of the Fryers Ridge State Forest and Conservation Reserve.
Car pooling from Airport West available, otherwise meet at Elphinstone.
Green Gully Circuit
This walk was last led in 2023 by Therese Ryan and is worth repeating. Starting from the Garden of St Erth second carpark, the walk begins with a long gradual uphill before being rewarded with the ferns and trees of Green Gully and the Lerderderg River Heritage Walk. It is mostly on minor tracks. Boots and poles are recommended. Refreshments will be at the Blackwood Post Office Cafe.
Note: The meeting place is Garden of St Erth and the address is 189 Simmons Reef Road, Blackwood. When you arrive at the Garden of St Erth drive to the second car park which is on your right and up a short hill.
