Lerderderg Circuit - Sardine Creek, Clearwater Creek and the Tunnel

Sat May 31st 2025 9:30:00 -3:00:00

A walk exploring the Lerderderg River gorge and two of its tributary creeks - Sardine Creek and Clearwater Creek - to the immediate North of O'Briens Crossing. Also includes a short diversion to visit the Tunnel, where early gold miners diverted the river through a spur. Only a little over 10km, but medium-hard overall - some 4WD tracks, some rocky foot tracks and a section off-track along Clearwater Creek. Also, as usual along the Lerderderg, a bit up and down - athough we don't climb all the way up out of the gorge, for a change. Poles recommended.

The walk starts at O'Briens Crossing at 9.30 - if you're driving there, approaching from the Western side of the Gorge (ie via Greendale, etc) is recommended. There is a toilet at the Picnic Area.

Car-pool from Airport West if required.

San Remo to Cape Paterson

Fri Jun 6th 2025 6:00:00 - Sun Jun 8th 2025 2:30:00

Celebrate the approach of the Winter solstice (and Charles' Birthday!) with a bracing walk along the coast from San Remo to Cape Paterson. Two days walking, but you will have just a light day-pack if you choose to book accommodation in Wonthaggi. Not only is the coastal scenery magnificent, but there's a good chance of spotting a whale or two along the coast at this time of year.

The Plan ...
Friday afternoon - drive to San Remo, (book your own accommodation), meet at San Remo Hotel for evening meal.
Saturday morning, early - we'll have to set up a car-shuffle, leaving one or more cars at Cape Paterson.
Saturday - Walk, 19km, (can be shortened if required) good paths (George Bass Coastal Path and Kilcunda/Wonthaggi Rail Trail) to Wonthaggi. Book own accommodation - take a tent if you like! Evening meal out, tba.
Sunday - Walk, 13km. Wonthaggi Coal Mine Historic Reserve, minor tracks to Harmers Haven, beach walking to Cape Paterson.
Monday (optional) - The official activities will cease on Sunday afternoon, but Monday is a holiday, so walkers could spend an extra day in the area if they wished.

Note: I don't expect accommodation to be too hard to get, but it is a long weekend, so maybe?

Sassafras & Sherbrooke

Mon Jun 9th 2025 9:30:00 -2:30:00

This is a walk for a quiet Monday public holiday in a pretty part of the Dandenong Ranges. It will be in 2 parts, both of which will start and end at the Ferny Creek Recreation Reserve with a lunch break between each part also at the reserve. The first part will head downhill through the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens and uphill via Sassafras Creek to the Sassafras shops where the route will pick up a couple of quiet backstreets to arrive back at the reserve. After lunch the second part of the walk will be in Sherbrooke Forest to the Sherbrooke Falls and back to the reserve via a boundary fire track.

It is a bit of a stretch to grade the walk as easy/medium as most of it is easy even the uphill sections, but if there are several days of rain prior to the walk it could be very muddy and slow going. Bring boots and poles if you use them, morning tea and lunch, and appropriate weather gear. There are conveniences at the reserve.

Don't count on a drink at a cafe after the walk as not many cafes may not be open on a public holiday.

Circuit of New Perimeter Fence of Woodlands Bandicoot Enclosure..

Wed Jun 18th 2025 10:00:00 -1:30:00

A walk for those members not attending the Broken Hill Base Camp but still wanting some excerise. The new perimeter fence has been finished around the Bandicoot Enclosure following the decision to reduce the size of the " back paddock" and moving it to the west. This walk will take walkers around the outside of the newly fenced enclosure following the new fenceline.
An added bonus will be a visit to the Bandicoots Flight Path Project alongside the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail.
Some of the walk will be off track, but easy walking, the terrain along the fenceline being grassland. Runners should be ok unless it has been raining in the area in the days prior to the walk, when boots would be preferable.

Refreshments and toilets will be available at the Homestead.

North Shore to Geelong.

Sat Jun 21st 2025 8:55:00 -2:00:00

This is a repeat of the Wednesday walk held in March this year, but in reverse ie finishing in Geelong where afternoon tea will be in plentifull supply unlike at the finish of the mid week walk.
We will meet at the Vintage Clock at Southern Cross Station by 8.55 am. In time to catch the 9.10 am V Line service to Waurn Ponds, due to arrive at North Shore at 10.04 am.  This train stops to pick up passengers at Footscray (9.18 am.), Sunshine (9.23 am.), Deer Park (9.28 am.), and Tarneit (9.37am).

The walk starts with a visit to nearby Moorpanyal Park Reserve (toilet)and then heads south towards Geelong, passing the new Tasmania Ferry Terminal before making our way to the bayside walking track passing through St. Helens Park, Rippleside Beach, and then along The Esplanade and the Bob Megovan Path to Cunningham Pier ( toilets).
From there it is only a short walk to Geelong  Station and the train home - BUT,  not before a well earned stop for afternoon tea at a suitable place.

Walking poles won't be needed, the walk being mainly flat and suitable for walking shoes.

If you prefer to drive, there should be plenty of available spaces at the North Shore Station Car Park, but you will need to get public transport back to your car from the finish at Geelong Station.

Mt Everard

Sat Jul 5th 2025 9:30:00 -2:30:00

A forested walk in Kinglake National Park, starting and finishing at Everard Track Carpark. Generally good walking along quiet bush tracks, with however a fairly serious undulation in the middle reaches - Bundy Track climbing to Mt Everard, Just 11km.

Starting point is "Everard Track Carpark". (9.30am) That's directly beside the main road from St Andrews to Kinglake, 2 or 3 km South of Kinglake. Two things to be aware of if you let Google take you there - DON'T search for "Mt Everard Carpark", there is such a place but it's not where we are. Also, Mrs Google will probably send you via St Andrew's - go that way if you like, but via Kinglake is a little longer but MUCH straighter.

Car-pooling available from Airport West. Meet at 8am.

Coffee in Kinglake after the walk.
