Walk
Westmeadows - Gellibrand Hill - Woodlands HP Circuit.
An easy walk to shake off the cobwebs of the Christmas/ New Year festivities.
The walk starts at Westmeadows Oval and includes a circuit of Attwood, a walk along the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail to Woodlands Historic Park. Then a circuit of Gellibrand Hill is followed by walking through the Eastern area of Woodlands that was once a part of the Back Paddock ( Bandicoot Enclosure). Getting back to the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail, we follow the Creek back to the finish at.Westmeadows Oval.
The walk can be increased or decreased depending on the forecast weather conditions.
Tri Club Walk from Greensborough to Heidelberg First of 4 Linked Walks
The first of a series of 4 walks linking Greenborough to the Bay Beaches. Total distance of about 50kms.
This is another Tri-club walk with Diamond Valley and Koonung. Starting at Greensborough rail station we’ll walk along the Plenty River and Main Yarra trails to Heidelberg station. The distance is a 12 kms Easy walk - with some small undulations, and one steeper hill at about the halfway section. We’ll avoid the main shared paths as much as possible and walk along the tracks close to the riverbanks. This will maximize the available shade and separate us from the cyclists. There is a mixture of scattered shade and full sunlight on this walk, with drinking fountains along the way. However, if the temperature is forecast above 30 degrees in the early part of the day, I’ll cancel the walk and reschedule for cooler months. Toilets are a bit scarce along the trails, but are at Greensborough, maybe at Yallambie Park (4.5kms) and at lunch. We may have an early morning tea at Montmorency (1.5km) then Lunch at Warringal Parklands (10.5 kms) – with rest stops in between.
Runners should be ok, but sturdy walking shoes and poles are recommended, as the path can be rugged for a short distance.
Maximum of 8 members per club, and I will adjust the numbers depending on the level of interest.
If driving, I suggest you park at Heidelberg and catch the train to Greensborough. Parking should be available at the station car park off Yarra street as it will still be the Festive Season off-peak. We will start walking from Greensborough at 9:00am to avoid the potential heat.
Hells Hole Track Macedon Ranges
This 10.5 km walk on the east side of Mt Towrong follows good tracks and is quite shady. We will start at Days Picnic Ground, enjoy Sanatorium Lake and then use Zigzag and Hemphills tracks to join Hells Hole Track. This intersects with Barringo Rd which we will follow uphill to our cars. It is deliberately short and starts earlier than usual so we can enjoy a stretch in the bush and be home for an afternoon rest. It is a pleasant, undulating walk. Days Picnic Ground is extensive so we will meet near the toilets, the only building there.

Sherbrooke Forest
A fairly standard walk but in one of our area's best locations. Tall montane forests, lyrebirds etc. This walk will follow the path described in Chapman's book "Day Walks Melbourne" (Walk 24). A circuit walk starting and finishing at Grants Picnic Ground, Kallista. Distance 11.5km, good walking tracks; a bit up and down (it is the Dandenongs, after all) - total up/down is 480m.
Elevation, tall forests and shaded tracks mean hopefully excess heat won't be a problem, but the walk will possibly be cancelled if it's a very hot day forecast.
Car-pooling from Moonee Ponds (8am) or meet at Grants (9.15am)

Anzac Station to Moonee Ponds
Please read addendum, below ...
OK, so it's Australia Day. Not normally something I get too excited about, but this year I thought I'd offer a walk from our new Anzac Station, passing lots of Australiana and finishing at our own Moonee Ponds home base (passing Cobbers Memorial, the Shrine, Simpson and the Donkey, Australian Turkish memorial, John Monash and Thomas Blainey's monuments, King George momorial, Sydney Myer Arts centre, Yarra River, William Barack bridge, Danaher's Way, The MCG with Dennis Lillee, Shane Warne, John Coleman, Jim Stynes, Neil Harvey, Kevin Bartlett and Norm Smith statues, Fitzroy Gardens and Cook's cottage, St Patrick's Cathedral, Pastor Doug and Lady Gladys Nichols Memorial, Royal Exhibition Buildings, Grollo Fountain, Bali Memorial, Melbourne University, Anzac Memorial, Melbourne General Cemetary with Prime Ministers Memorial Garden, Princes Park, Royal Park with Burke and Wiils Memorial, finishing in Moonee Ponds with of course Everage St and our very own Burke and Wills Memorial in Queen's Park.
The walk will start at 9.30am, from a cafe near Anzac Station (tba when I know what's open). Get to the cafe at 9.00 if you want a coffee before the walk.
Distance is 16km -there are of course lots of "stopping early" localities if the feet get sore ...
Addendum (added after my pre-walk)
1. The Cafe to meet at is "The Kettle Black", address 50 Albert Rd, South Melbourne. It's about 100m SW of Anzac Station. It's a nice cafe, get there at 9am for a coffee or meet to start the walk at 9.30.
2. Don't rely on Southbound trains on the new Metro Line to Anzac Station. Check if you like, but they weren't running this morning prior to 10am. Safer to go to Flinders St and catch a tram down to Anzac.
3. The number of monuments and statues to took at (and I do mean to stop at most - they're very interesting) means it's a slow journey. Because of that, I'll probably call a stop after about 12.5km, when we're near the corner of Flemington Rd and Elliot Avenue. (The last few km to Moonee Ponds are a bit "ho hum: anyway ...). From that location, the 59 tram goes North towards Essendon or South back to the City).
Royal and Princes Parks Walk
This urban walk starts at Moonee Ponds Bowling Club, goes down some side streets to Moonee Ponds Creek, passes through Parkville Gardens and emerges near some playing fields of Royal Park. We'll have morning tea here before joining the Capital City Trail for a short time then do a loop of Princes Park and break for lunch. We'll then rejoin the Capital City Trail and make our way back to the bowling club. An easy walk on mainly flat surfaces with some small climbs midway and at the end. Joggers are fine. Boots optional. If weather is forecast to be over 30 degrees the walk may be modified or cancelled.
NOTE: Public transport to the Bowling Club is recommended as the walk is on a weekday where parking is limited.
Bostock Reservoir/ Exploration
Near Ballan, this storage reservoir offers good walking in the Bungal forest around it. This walk will be partly exploratory as I have not visited the area since May last year. We will be using a variety of tracks and there will be a little off track walking. Distance will be 14 to 16 km. It is undulating at times and poles are recommended.
