SUMMARY:Pyrites Creek
DESCRIPTION:Pyrete Range\, North of Melton\, is a relatively recent additio
n to Lerderderg State Park. This walk is along 4WD tracks and walking trac
ks for the first 5km\, passing by an old antimony mine. We then enter Pyri
tes Creek (normally dry) and walk along the sinuous river-stone bed of the
creek for a bit over 4km\, before ascending back towards the vehicles\, i
nitially along an un-tracked gully then walking/4wd tracks. Under 14km in
length and not particularly hilly\, the \"medium-hard\" designation comes
from the fact that over half of the walk is on natural surfaces - river be
d and vegetated side-gully. Additionally\, if it has been wet\, wet feet c
an be expected! Poles are recommended.
(This walk is described in \"Dayw
 alks around Victoria\" (Glenn Tempest)\, walk 19.
To get to the start po
int - 1. Get to the small town of Toolern Vale &nbsp\; 2. Head West on Dig
gers Rest - Coimadai Rd for just over 7km. &nbsp\; &nbsp\; 3. Turn right i
nto Antimony Mine Road and follow it for 3.7km to a small car-park.
 Car-
pooling available from Moonee Ponds Bowls Club - encouraged where possible
as the car park is small.
