Braeside Park and Waterways.

Wed Feb 16th 2022 8:50:00 -2:30:00

Following a recent Prewalk of this event, a few changes to the planned walk have been made to the description on the website. The main change is to shorten the walk because of the warmer weather. The Prewalk indicated a distance of 18.5 km. considered too long for the forecast high 20’s.on the day of the walk. To do this we won’t be walking the complete circuit of waterways but just a part of it. This will also avoid wet feet, as part of the track was under water at the time of the Prewalk. This reduces the walk to about 17 km. The circuit walk of Waterways will be included in a future walk in this area.

The walk starts at Mordialloc Station and proceeds along Mordialloc Creek to the suburb of Waterways, a residential suburb, claimed to be Australia’s only suburb with 20% parkland and 40% water. Here you will get a close up look of the Springvale Road to Dingley Bypass extension of the Mornington Peninsula Freeway, an interesting bit of engineering that has been constructed over the wetlands in the past four years . Leaving the Freeway and Waterways, we cross Grosvenor Road into Braeside Park. Once used for market gardens and a sewage treatment site, it was also home to a training track for Phar Lap. This park is now a mix of revegetated bush land and wetland. There are many facilities including an information centre, toilets, drinking water fountains, and 12 km. of multipurpose trails of which we will walk a circuit of 5/6 km. This includes passing some tree stump carvings, and walking along the Wetlands Trail, visiting a bird hide.

After lunch and the second part of the circuit of the park we will return to Waterways before making our way to Aspendale Station for the return train journey to Flinders Street Station and home. The walk is flat (sea level) and mainly on gravel walking tracks with a small amount of suburban street walking. Walking poles shouldn’t be needed.

Because most of the walk is in the open, therefore, if the forecast maximum temperature on the day for the Mordialloc/Braeside area is above 30 degrees, the walk will be postponed and put on the programme at a later date. Bring a good supply of water, remembering that you should be able to top up in Braeside Park. At the moment the forecast maximum temperature for the Braeside/Mordialloc area on the walk day is for 27 degrees. Toilet facilities are available at our entry/exit and our lunch stop in Braeside Park and also at Aspendale Gardens on the way back to Aspendale Station.

Covid restrictions are to be adhered to where applicable, particularly on the trains. Meet at Flinders Street Station Coffee Shops by 8.50 am. for the 9.00. train to Mordialloc

Green spine and Steels creek

Wed Mar 2nd 2022 9:30:00 -4:00:00

An easy walk just to keep the leg muscles in condition for the more energetic winter walks coming up. We will walk down the Green Spine which is an enviromental architectural project to create a green ribbon through a semi industrial area. It then connects with the very pleasant Steeles creek. A detour to the bikies grave on the railway cutting, a tour around the Valley Lake and then 100 steps up to the Valley Lookout. Lunch at the Kelvin Close playground. We aim to return via the other side of Steeles Creek but if the weather is getting warmish we can take an easy option by continuing down the creek a little further and then after visiting the Lily St lookout (nice views of the city and the river) and then return to Airport West by the bus and tram. (bring Myki card). Meet at the carpark at the rear of Aldi, (Moore St) and aim for the quieter SE corner) at 9.30am. Flat surfaces and walking paths so walking shoes will be fine. Hat, water, lunch, UV cream etc.
