Eagles Nest Circuit Dandenong's

Sun Mar 6th 2022 8:00:00 -4:00:00

This is a 12km circular walk in the Dandenong Ranges National Park, Olinda starting and finishing at the Eagles Nest Picnic Ground car park. The walk is on forest roads and walking tracks through the temperate rain forest of the Dandenongs and passes through a number of fern gullys. There is considerable evidence of past bushfires along the walk.

The first 3kms of the walk are relatively flat and there the walk is uphill for the next 5kms. From the highest point the rest of the walk is down hill to the start point. The uphill section is reasonably challenging but not beyond anyone with a reasonable level of fitness.

River 'Cruising' & Island Exploring

Sun Mar 13th 2022 10:30:00 -3:30:00

Since cruising down the Rhine and island hopping in Greece have been off the radarfor several years now, this is the Melbourne version. ( much smaller and cheaper!). A mini mini river cruise and a tiny island to explore. Herring Island is only accessable by a punt over the summer weekends. The island is only 3 hectares in size but it is a world away from the bustle of the city and has 9 environmental scuptures to discover along with a small art gallery. If its pleasant weather , its a 4.5 km walk along the river bank, or choose a shady path nearer the road but if its getting rather warm, there is a shorter option from the South Yarra rly st. Being a short summer holiday walk, we can have a lazy start meeting at the Flinders St coffee shop area at 10.30. Morning tea beside the river and coffee after at the conveniently located cafe at the punt landing. Light walking shoes will be fine and dont forget the sunhat, UV cream and water. If you have never been to Herring island , come along and discover a little bit of secret Melbourne

Melton Viaduct Circuit.

Wed Mar 16th 2022 9:30:00 -2:30:00

The walk starts at the Arthur Westlake Memorial Reserve (Melway 336 D8) and proceeds in a south east direction towards the Woodgrove Shopping Centre which we circuit around - non stop - to cross Coburns Road and head south west back to Arnold's Creek West Branch and follow the creek down to the railway line, continuing south to the Melton Pistol Club and the Werribee River/Melton Reservoir. We will stop here for lunch and maybe watch some fish being caught, or the Melbourne - Ballarat trains crossing our objective for the day, the viaduct.

This will be as close as you will get to the viaduct without getting your feet wet, having the use of water craft or doing something illegal.
After lunch at this idyllic spot, we walk up the hill away from the river and pass the old Melton Stud and call in to have a look at the grave of The Welkin, one of the most successful sires that ever did stud duty in Australia, with his progeny having won nearly 550 races. Heading north, we follow the track to cross the Western Freeway on Bulmans Road and then back to the cars at the starting point.

The walk is rated Easy/Medium, only because of the possibility of some muddy areas following any recent rain, and so it is recommended that boots are worn.

Covid restrictions are to be adhered to where applicable, and all walkers must be fully vaccinated.

Meet by 9.30 am. at the Arthur Westlake Memorial Reserve Car Park - Bulmans Road. Melway 336 D8.

Louise's Warburton Walk

Sun Mar 20th 2022 7:30:00 -4:30:00

This walk starts off innocently enough, lulling you into a false sense of security, don’t be fooled though, this walk is for those that enjoy a good challenge

Starting at the Warburton Recreation Reserve we will make our way downstream along the river path, which is very pleasant and has wonderful views along the river.  After about 2 1/2 kms we leave the river and enjoy more pleasant walking along the Warburton to Lilydale rail trail.  Morning tea will be held in Millgrove, where there are seats, toilets and a bakery, what could be more civilised and relaxing.  After a well-rested morning tea, we head back on the rail trail for a short stint before crossing the highway and making our way past some houses into the Yarra Ranges State Forest, picking up a nice wide and graded fire trail, which starts off easily enough with a gentle grade.

However, this does not last long before we go up, up, up, to the peak of Mt Little Joe our total ascent is only 470 metres, all of which is done in only a couple of kilometres.  Once at the top we are rewarded with no view whatsoever, the forest though is very pleasant and well shaded.  Once our breath catches up with us and after a well earned lunch rest then it is down, down, down.  The down is steeper than the up!

Finally, we will reach the Backstairs track which makes lovely walking back into Warburton, meeting up with the rail trail once again and then finally back to our cars and afternoon tea or an ice-cream at one of Warburton’s many cafes, before heading home.

The walk is rated at moderately hard, is all on track and is only 13 km long.  It could be a Bob friendly as there is only one long hill.  Because it is a bit of a drive across town, we will leave MPBC car park at 0730hrs

Anglesea Perimeter Walk - East

Wed Mar 23rd 2022
Meeting at either Moonee Ponds or Anglesea Bowling Club car parks (turn left at roundabout in Anglesea township) we will then walk down the river to the beach before heading up onto the highly significant Anglesea heathlands which contain the most diverse vegetation community in Victoria. We will gradually make our way up to the top of the ridge which will give us spectacular views before descending quickly to the road. After crossing the road we will have some ups and downs before agaqin meeting the river and following it back to the beginning. As at times the track has loose gravel and sand, poles would be useful.

Sorry, the event is now full and we could not accept more registration
