Mt Bogong the 'Easiest' way (via Granite Flat Spur)

Sat Apr 9th 2022 - Sun Apr 10th 2022

This is the second attempt at running this walk. The first attempt, in early December 2021, was thwarted a critical road bridge, at Mountain Creek campground, being out of action for a major upgrade.

There is no such thing as an ‘Easy’ route up Mount Bogong, Victoria’s highest point, at 1986m, just ‘Easier’ routes. This walk will go via Granite Flat Spur, the ‘easiest’ route. Compared to the traditional route of Staircase Spur, this route saves about 500m of climbing. And compared to Eskdale Spur, this route saves about 200m of climbing.

We’ll meet at the Mountain Creek campsite and drive on un-sealed roads (AWD needed) to Granite Flat Spur. From there it is walking up to the summit for fantastic views before going onto the delightful camp at Cleve Cole Hut. On Sunday most walkers will descend via Eskdale Spur, except for the drivers, who will descend Granite Flat Spur.

This walk is alpine, and some previous pack walking experience is required. Mount Bogong has a nasty habit of generating its own weather, despite good forecasts, and walkers need to be prepared for this, including the possibility of snow.

Despite the possibility of bad weather, this will be a memorable walk on the roof of Victoria. We look forward to seeing you there.

Ringwood lake and Tarralla Trail

Sat Apr 16th 2022 8:55:00

For the stay at homes, those not venturing out of Melbourne for Easter, why not have a pleasant day out exploring new territory, new even for the well seasoned walkers of the club.  We aim to take the train out to Ringwood and then stroll up to the Ringwood Lake and enjoy a pleasant circuit of the lake in this attractive park.  Leaving the park and via several suburban streets, we head out on the Heathmont Rail Trail. After a few easy kms of walking we change over to the Dandenong Creek trail and continue on until we reach the point of crossing under the railway line and head north to connect to the Tarralla Creek trail. A civilized lunch stop at Gracedale Park with picnic shelters, tables and toilets before rejoining the trail to stroll along the green , attractive and at times quite bushy path to reach the sports and Civic complexes of Croydon.  The last km is of course via a coffee shop (milk shakes) before we reach Croydon Rly Stn to return to the city.  Guaranteed easy, not a hill in sight, good surfaces for walking, and green and pleasant scenery for most of the route, all should make for nice way to make the most of one of the days over Easter. Meet at 8.55 at the Flinders St coffee shops area (we seem to congregate on the steps at the back of the metro info centre) for the 9.06 to Ringwood. Bring the usual lunch, drink, hat UV cream etc. Comfortable walking shoes will be fine.

Sorry, the event is now full and we could not accept more registration

Grandparent's Walk - Barwon Heads to Ocean Grove

Wed Apr 20th 2022 8:15:00 -5:30:00

We catch the 8:30am train towards South Geelong and get off at Geelong for the 9:45am 55 Bus to Barwon Heads.  We then start walking from the Barwon Heads Bowling club for a morning tea stop, then through the park and back streets before joining the track around the Bluff.  Descending to the beach, we then cross the bridge to Ocean Grove – walking along the beach to the Surf Club for lunch, where there is a kiosk.

After lunch we’ll walk to a bus stop for the 1:19pm bus back to Geelong.  The plan is to catch the 3:30pm ferry from Geelong back to Docklands, however members can also return to Melbourne by train.  To catch the ferry, we will need to get off the bus at Moorabool Street to buy Ferry tickets in time for a leisurely afternoon tea before catching the Ferry.

There are toilets at Geelong station, near Barwon Heads Bowling Club, Ocean Grove beach and on the ferry/Vline trains.

Please provide me with the names of your grandchildren, so I can register them for the event.  Children will need the appropriate Myki for the trains and buses with a credit of at least $11.00 (and Seniors $23.00) if travelling the round trip by train.  The one-way Ferry fares are: Adult $18.00 Seniors, $16.00 and Children, $10.00.  Bring morning tea, snacks and lunch, although the kiosk may be open at our lunch stop.
